Special Education Program

It is our goal to help all students reach their God given potential, so we make every effort to understand and accommodate needs that are not fully met within the regular classroom setting.

The resource teachers take a supportive role in identifying and planning programs for any students who are considered to be at risk. For some students, resource support in the primary grades is all that is required. Other students encounter difficulties throughout their elementary education due to learning disabilities or other issues. The resource teacher works alongside the classroom teacher to provide programs that will enable the students to encounter success. Students generally remain in the classroom with their peers and receive help on a withdrawal basis.

Though a student may initially be referred for resource support by parents or teachers, parental permission is required before the child enters the program. Informal and formal testing may be done as it is deemed necessary, and an individual educational plan (IEP) may be developed. Regular communication with parents and principal is maintained through conferences and anecdotal progress reports which are issued after each term.

The Ontario Ministry of Health provides funding for speech therapy, as well as occupational and physiotherapy for identified students. The Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) of Halton works with our school to deliver these services to our students.

The resource room may also be involved in enrichment programming, supporting teachers by identifying students and differentiating curriculum for those students who are intellectually gifted and need to be challenged in higher level thinking skills, problem solving and independent study skills.

Expanding the Horizons K - 8 Enrichment Manual (1998) (OACS) is a resource for the theory and planning of enrichment programming.
