In Grades 3 and 4, students begin to think more independently, marking an important stage where they can be expected to step up to meet greater academic demands and take increased ownership of learning goals and success criteria.

Students continue to be encouraged to ask good questions and gain skills in research and investigation to find answers. These grades provide increased possibilities for collaborative learning toward common and meaningful goals. Hands-on learning and project work provide opportunities to gain knowledge and to celebrate learning. Third and fourth graders continue to develop their ability to work independently, in small groups, and as a whole class. At this age, social relationships grow in their importance.

As personal understanding of God and His world develops, students are often ready to be challenged in expressing a personal faith and reach higher expectations of character integrity.

Teaching Team

I have been teaching at Trinity in Grade Three for the past two years. I live in Burlington with my husband Ron and our three daughters. While in high school I already had a desire for teaching. God led me through many opportunities where I worked with children. I graduated from Calvin College and began my journey as a teacher. For the first 10 years of my career, I taught in Port Perry, Willowdale, Bowmanville and Burlington, Ontario. About 5 years ago my family and I moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, to teach in a Christian International school. I love being a teacher and I especially love how God teaches me things everyday in my role here at Trinity. Currently I am working towards being a specialist in Special Education.

I always wanted to be a teacher. As I grew, that desire became a passion and a calling. I enjoy being part of the lives of so many interesting, unique and eager students. My faith forms the grounding foundation of my life, and it is a joy and privilege to work in a school where I can teach each subject through a worldview that places God at the center. Teaching is a deeply challenging profession, but, without a doubt, it is more enriching, inspiring and fulfilling than I could have imagined.

Jacquie DeRaaf - Grades 3/4
Throughout my life, I have a developed a joy and passion for working with children. My passion for teaching and working with children led me to enroll in the Concurrent Education Program at Brock University, which included a teaching practicum in Cape Town, South Africa. Since 2013, God has blessed me with the opportunity to use my gifts and talents at Trinity to create holistic, Christ-centered classrooms for my students.

Katelyn Pot - Grade 4
I have been teaching at Trinity since 2007. I am thankful to belong to God, and to have been directed by Him to teach in a Christian school. It is a great privilege to get to know the children in our classrooms, and to do our part in opening their eyes, minds and hearts to God, His word, and His world. The primary way to get to know and love someone is to talk with him and listen to that person. In Christian schools, we aim to know the Lord in chapels and other devotional times. A second way to get to know someone is to get to know what he or she loves. In Christian schools, we do that the rest of the day. Students get to explore all that God created and loves. Everything good that God made tells us something about who He is, whether it is trees, colours, government or numbers. It is exciting to see our students be curious and enthusiastic about discovering new things. It is exciting to see them discover abilities that they did not realize they had. It is especially exciting to catch glimpses of students being affected by the love of God.
